Paramount Plus has announced that it has discontinued its “Halo” TV show after two seasons.

The news comes just months after the premiere of “Halo” Season 2. The show's first season, an adaptation of the video game, caused a serious backlash from fans, with “Tom's Guide” writer Tom Pritchard claiming he wanted the show to die.

While the second broadcast saw some major improvements under new showrunner David Weiner, the changes did not seem to be enough to warrant a renewal for a third season.

Paramount Plus' statement on the news reads: Paramount Plus has confirmed that “Halo” will not be moving to a third season on the service. [We are extremely proud of this ambitious series, and we are very proud of our partners at Xbox, 343 Industries, and Amblin Television, showrunner and executive producer David Wiener, his fellow executive producers, master I want to thank the entire cast, led by Pablo Schreiber as Chief, and our wonderful staff for their outstanding work. We wish them all the best for the future.”

Like the hit video game franchise, the “Halo” TV show revolves around the 26th century war between the human UNSC and the alien Covenant, with Pablo Schreiber taking the lead role as the series' Spartan super-soldier, Master Chief. [Commenting on the news, 343 Industries said, “We are deeply grateful to the millions of fans who have made the ‘Halo’ series a worldwide success. We are grateful for the partnership between Amblin and Paramount to bring our expansive sci-fi universe to a global audience.” (quotes via Variety)

If you're disappointed to learn that the “Halo” TV show is over, there's at least a chance that other networks and streaming distributors will come to the rescue.

Variety, which reported the cancellation, writes that sources “in the know” of the situation say that Xbox, Amblin TV, and 343 Industries are aiming to scour the show in hopes that it will find a new home. Whether they will succeed remains to be seen, but this claim at least offers a slight chance that the show's fate is not sealed.
