Google's Snapseed image editing app will eventually get updates, but no AI tools — is that time coming to an end?

Google has released a new update for Snapseed, one of the best photo editing apps you can use on Ios or Android 1. However, the update does not offer much to users through specific new features and, oddly, lacks any kind of AI capabilities offered by rival apps.

News about this update, published last week, was picked up by 9to5Google, which pointed to a lack of meaningful AI investment — certainly unusual for Google's portfolio at the moment.

Snapseed has seen quite a few updates since its acquisition in 2012. Google has been working to introduce a complete redesign and dark mode to keep the app relevant. However, while Snapseed has a great UI that makes it easy to edit by simply swiping up and down, it's still lacking compared to mainstream apps like Google Photos, which implement some AI features.

Google Photos has a lot to offer to users, especially since it adds features like Magic Editor. We recently announced a new feature that Google Photos also allows you to select your favorite contacts, making it easier to send them full quality images, by reducing the quality of your backed up photos, which means that they take up less space

Google Photos. Photos and others offer a lot to users, but perhaps Google keeps Snapseed intentionally simple? It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of other apps, but the human process can be edited and the UI is particularly easy to understand. But we can also not question whether this deliberately poor update is a sign that the app is coming to the end of its life.

Of course, if you're not interested in either of Google's products, there's a complete list of the best Google Photos choices to help you choose the next editing app.
