Search circles on Android can get a barcode scanner — what to expect here

Circle for searching on Android devices is one of the best features that Google has recently rolled out.1 If a batch of new codes is to be believed, Google will soon add new features to Ciircle to search, including the "Find this barcode" option.

If you haven't noticed, Circle To Search is an Android gesture that allows users to search on the screen of their smartphone by simply circling the item of interest. It was launched in May with the Samsung Galaxy S24 phone. Since then, Google has been gradually expanding Circle to search for more devices and is reportedly working on adding search tools to google Chrome.

As discovered by Android Police, the ability for circle to search to read barcodes is coming soon.

Currently, when you use Circle to search for barcodes, users are turning to search results using other similar barcodes. This is done instead of being redirected to the barcode content.

The updated feature allows Circle to search to read barcodes from photos on the website or on the phone. We believe that Google's implementation of this feature should be simple, so we expect it to roll out soon.

The only thing that keeps the circle to search back from being one of the best Android features is availability. Currently, the gesture feature is only available on Samsung Galaxy S6.1 and Samsung phones running One UI24, and the Google Pixel8 series. These 2 phone lines have a lot of Android market, but there are a lot of non-google and Samsung phones running Android that can use this feature.

One of our favorite ways to search using Circle 1 is the Camera app. It already works well with images on your phone, but Google Lens needs another app that you may not be using yet.

Searching for a camera app using Circle means you don't have to clog the gallery with unwanted images. Try it.

Beyond just searching, gestures also recently gained instant translation support, allowing users to quickly translate languages on the screen.  Google has made several announcements about AI and the company's Gemini AI Assistant. With I/O2024, more circles could see improvements in search.
