Top 7 New Movies Available This Week on Netflix, Prime Video, Max and More (April 30-May 6)

Last week was a slow week for new films, but the best streaming services are catching up over the next seven days as strong collections of new films arrive on platforms including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Max.

One of the biggest new releases this week is Prime Video's The Idea of You. Anne Hathaway plays a middle-aged woman who falls in love with a man much younger than she is, who also happens to be the singer of the biggest boy band in the world. In addition, the latest film adaptation of John Green's novel is coming to Max, and Netflix will be releasing a new movie about the birth of Pop Tart.

If you're looking for the latest movies to enjoy at home, you've come to the right place. Below you will find a roundup of the best new movies on the most popular streaming services. Also, check out our guide to the best new shows you can watch this week.

Nicolas Cage has spent the last few years making bad movies that never made it to DVD, but films like "Pig," "Unburdened," and "Dream Scenario" have reminded us that Cage is a performer of exceptional talent and is enjoying a career renaissance.

In this horror thriller, Cage plays Paul, the father of twin teenagers Joseph (Jaden Martel) and Thomas (Maxwell Jenkins), and his efforts to protect his sons in a post-apocalyptic world. The family lives in a remote farmhouse and enjoys peace during the day, but at night they face unseen horrors. When Thomas does not return home before sundown, the film kicks into gear and Paul is forced to venture out into the darkness and confront the relentless evil that lurks in the shadows.

"Not So Much About You" is coming to Prime Video this week after debuting at South by Southwest earlier this year and impressing at the Media Festival. It currently holds a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes, but that rating could fluctuate as streaming begins and more critics get a chance to evaluate the romantic comedy.

The film is about a budding romance between Solène (Anne Hathaway), a 40-year-old single mother, and Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine), the 20-something lead singer of August Moon, the most popular boy band in the world. When the two meet at the Coachella Festival, an unexpected spark ignites between them. Each belongs to a different world, but as the two grow closer and the frenzied romance builds, Solène finds the difficulties of celebrity life, and public pressure brings new obstacles to their relationship.

Available on Prime Video on May 2

Adapted from the best-selling novel of the same name by American author and blogger John Green, "Turtles All the Way Down," which is also based on Green's novel, has been a hit with fans of "Not the Stars" and " Paper Towns" will almost certainly appeal to fans of the film (though both were released theatrically, while "Turtles All the Way Down" is headed straight to streaming).

In this original Max film, Isabella Merced plays the lead role of Aza Holmes. Aza is a teenager who struggles with a severe anxiety disorder, and the film depicts her attempts to navigate the roller coaster of adolescence without allowing her intrusive thoughts and crippling fears to dominate her life and chances for happiness. Her best friend Daisy (Cree), her boyfriend Davis (Felix Mallard), and her supportive mother (Judy Reyes) also make appearances. In addition to depicting Aza's attempts to grow up gracefully, there is also a subplot involving a fugitive billionaire who goes missing in the course of a criminal investigation.

Streaming on Max from May 2

"The Magical Negro Society of America" was a box office disappointment, appearing on paid streaming just two weeks after its March theatrical debut. Hopefully, its appearance on Peacock this week will encourage more people to give this unique fantasy film a chance.

The eponymous society is a secret organization of blacks with magical powers, dedicated to making life easier for whites. New recruit Allen (Justice Smith) is initially excited to discover that he possesses this supernatural power, but soon becomes disillusioned with the Society's mission as the flaws in the system quickly become apparent. The fantasy film also stars David Alan Greer as Allen's mentor Roger.

Available May 3 on Peacock

Although the name may not suggest it, "American Star" is actually a British film featuring a number of European talents, including Ian McShane, Thomas Kretschmann, Nora Arnezeder, and Adam Nagaitis. McShane plays Wilson, an aging hitman who grows tired of his violent profession and decides to do one last job before retiring.

On this final mission he heads for the island of Fuerteventura, but upon arrival he realizes that his target has not yet appeared. His last bloody mission becomes a quiet vacation instead. He befriends a local bartender, Gloria (Arnezedale), and begins to connect with the serene routine of this picturesque place. But Wilson's past is not so easily escaped, and the ghosts of his former life return to disturb his new harmony.

Available on AMC Plus beginning May 3

Sometimes it feels like Hollywood will make a movie out of anything, but a comedy about the creation of a pop tart really takes the cookie. Unfrosted may sound like an overdone April Fool's joke, but don't dismiss this Netflix original just yet. With the trailer above and the talent on both sides of the camera, this could be a surprise hit.

The legendary Jerry Seinfeld not only stars in "Unfrosted," but also directs and co-writes. Kellogg's employee Bob Cavanagh (Seinfeld) may have found a secret weapon, having developed a series of toaster pastries. The film also features top-notch comedic actors including Melissa McCarthy, Amy Schumer, Jim Gaffigan, Bill Burr, Peter Dinklage, Max Greenfield, and Hugh Grant.

Available on Netflix May 3

"Stop Making Sense," one of the most famous concert films of all time, was remastered and released theatrically last year, then released on the premium service in March, and now it is available on Max. The documentary celebrates its 40th anniversary this year and is offered for the first time in stunning 4K, giving veteran viewers a whole new look at the legendary American rock band Talking Heads.

The concert movie has inspired countless imitations over the years (its fingerprints can be felt all over the genre) for its masterful capture of the high-energy performance style Talking Heads brought to their live shows, acclaimed for decades. This remastering is a perfect celebration of the band and a must-see for fans and newcomers alike.
