Google may steal iOS lock screen feature.

Android 15 could reportedly take a hint from Apple regarding lock screen app support. This information comes from a report from Android Authority, which reports that Android 15 will include lock screen widget support for Google tablets, but not for Pixel phones.

Instead, Google will likely reference Apple's iOS Live Activities feature. For those unfamiliar with Live Activities, it provides frequent information updates that appear at a glance on the lock screen, much like Dynamic Island. This allows users to easily track the progress of a particular app without having to open their phone; Google's variation is revealed in a video that gives an idea of what it looks like.

Google is supposedly working on bringing similar functionality to the At a Glance Widget by integrating the RemoteViews API used by the Android app into the At a Glance Smartspace API. However, there are several issues. Mainly, At a Glance does not have space to display a full-sized widget. The video above shows At a Glance pulling relevant information from a third-party widget and displaying it instead of the full widget.

Another problem for Android users is that At a Glance is only fully functional on Pixel phones; if Google wants to expand its functionality, it will need to work with other manufacturers to expand widget availability and functionality. Currently, it is possible to download the At a Glance widget on other devices, but its functionality is limited on the home screens of non-Pixel phones.

Google released a Public Beta for Pixel phones on April 11, and this update brings several new improvements to the device, including other features hidden in the code. For example, Google recently discovered that users can force apps into dark mode. However, for all the benefits, the update brought some issues, and an early version affected the NFC feature, but Google released a patch to fix the problem.

This feature improves quality of life and is already full of updates. However, this feature is still in the early stages of development and may not be ready for the initial release of Android 15 later this year. We won't know for sure until the Google I/O event next month. Until then, stay tuned to the Android 15 hub for updates and rumors as they come in.
