Apple may use "best-in-market OLED panel" for 2024 iPad Pro

Rumors have long circulated that Apple's upcoming iPad Pro 2024 will be the first iPad to feature an OLED display. Apple has yet to officially confirm this upgrade, but details about what to expect have emerged. According to a new report, the upcoming iPad Pro will feature "by far the best OLED tablet panel on the market."

This is according to Ross Young, display analyst at Display Supply Chain Consultants The new OLED iPad Pro, to be unveiled at Apple's "Let Loose" event on May 7, will feature an LTPO display The LTPO display is a more power-efficient form of OLED that can deliver both higher refresh rates and resolution without turning the tablet into a battery-eating rectangle of glass and metal.

The panels also "enable ultra-thin and lightweight displays with high brightness, long battery life, and longevity thanks to 120Hz refresh, tandem stacking, and thinner glass," analysts said in a note to investors.

Young reiterated earlier reports that Apple will offer the new iPad Pro in 12.9-inch and 11.1-inch sizes. Apple is also expected to unveil new 10.9-inch and super-sized 12.9-inch iPad Air models with MiniLED displays.

The 2024 iPad Pro and iPad Air 6 were originally said to be released in March, but Apple chose to delay until May to finalize software upgrades and adjust manufacturing techniques needed to produce the screens for the new models, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported last month. Now Apple is expected to unveil a number of new iPad models at a showcase on May 7, including the new iPad Pro OLED and iPad Air.

OLED technology generally offers better image quality, with each pixel lighting up individually, ensuring perfect blacks and incredible contrast. To make the display even brighter and more efficient, Apple is said to be using a two-stack tandem structure panel. This means that the display will have two light-emitting layers, doubling the brightness compared to conventional OLED panels, while at the same time significantly extending the life of the display.

In addition to this, the iPad Pro will be powered by Apple's latest M4 chip and will support the all-new Magic Keyboard, which should greatly enhance productivity. But the star of the show may be the new Apple Pencil 3, which supports tactile feedback and squeezable gestures.
