Android's Google Gemini announces major real-time upgrade

Google Gemini may be getting an important upgrade on Android phones. There is no need to wait for a full response, as the current version of the Gemini app does.

This change was discovered in code by AssembleDebug (via PiunikaWeb). This change, which Google developers have dubbed "real-time response," can be seen as a toggle that says, "Responses in progress are displayed in real time."

In other words, Gemini follows ChatGPT and generates responses as they are generated, rather than making users wait for a full response. This is also how Google Gemini will work on the web, meaning that the Android app experience will change accordingly.

Naturally, it will take about the same amount of time as before for a complete answer to be generated. But if you want certain details right away, or if you prefer to check progress rather than sit tight, this change will certainly be appealing. It also helps to make conversations with the Gemini chatbot feel more natural.

But this is not the only change found in the Gemini app code; AssembleDebug also found a toggle that allows Gemini to access your device's location. This will allow Gemini to personalize answers based on where you are and to respond to different types of prompts. For example, you could ask Gemini for a good local restaurant or tourist spot.

It is unclear when any of these toggles will be accessible in the stable version of the Gemini app; AssembleDebug could turn on the real-time response toggle. But we will have to wait patiently to see what Google plans to do and how they intend to roll everything out.

Perhaps we will hear more details at Google I/O 2024, which is expected to take place next month.
