We love to see members of high society get caught up in the criminal underbelly rampant in the political systems of no small number of countries, and that's exactly what happens with regard to the 2024 Netflix series "The Gentlemen." Created by Guy Ritchie, the show also has the added bonus of showing the intensely dysfunctional family ties of the aristocratic protagonist Eddie Horniman, played by Theo James, when he inherits his family's legacy. What's at stake. It's a secret marijuana empire, and Eddie has nowhere to run.

This British dark comedy series stars Kaya Scodelario (Susie Glass), Giancarlo Esposito (Stanley Johnston), Daniel Ings (Freddie Honiman), Joely Richardson (Mrs. Sabrina) Vinnie Jones (Jeff Seacombe), and is filled with dry humor. The show is loosely based on Guy Ritchie's film of the same name, which just debuted in 2019. The Gentlemen stands on its own, but if you want more crime content about an unlikely criminal (but not really), there are plenty of similarly-minded (but very different) series to add to your binge queue.

Welcome to another series featuring a powerful family with a rather shady business: "The Mayor of Kingstown." Instead of drugs, the McCluskys deal with ...... The Prison System. In the crime-ridden fictional town of Kingstown, where the show is set, the incarceration business is the town's only game. The McCluskys orchestrate all aspects of the prison industry, from the police to the crime syndicates.

The family is powerful, but does not radiate aristocratic energy (and neither does their residence). Jeremy Renner (Mike McCluskey), Taylor Handley (Kyle McCluskey), Hugh Dillon (Ian), Tobi Bamtefa (Devlin Washington), and Dianne Wiest (Maryam McCluskey) lead the 2021 series. Despite mostly scathing reviews from critics, Rotten Tomatoes received a 90% viewer score. Hugh Dillon and Taylor Sheridan produced the series, which does not share a universe with their hit show "Yellowstone."

The tone and humor of "Weeds" is very different from "Gentleman," but the broad premise of "a family falls into the marijuana business" is comparable. Basically, if you want a comedic American version of a Netflix show without the puns and dry British humor, "Weeds" is a good choice.

The series was created by Jenji Kohan in 2005 and ran until 2012. Mary-Louise Parker leads the series as Nancy Botwin, a mother-turned-drug lord. Meanwhile, Hunter Parrish (Cyrus Botwin) and Alexander Gould (Doug Wilson) play her sons. The series also stars Kevin Nealon (Doug Wilson), Justin Kirk (Andy Botwin), and Elizabeth Perkins (Celia Hodes).

OK, so "The Fall of the House of Usher" may not seem like a good fit for a drag family show, but at its core it is quite relevant. Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe, the series, like "The Gentleman," is about a dysfunctional family screwed over by the patriarch. The family business is pharmaceutical, but it stinks as much as illegal drugs.

There are, of course, many supernatural elements to this series. But the family dynamics, dry humor, and betrayal are on the same level.

Mike Flanagan created the "2023" miniseries. It stars Carla Gugino (Verna), Bruce Greenwood (Roderick Usher), Mary McDonnell (Madeline Usher), Kate Siegel (Camille Respané), and Rahul Kohli (Leo Usher).

Another comedic (but often intense) Norman-turned-criminal series is the 2018 show "Good Girls." The female-led show may not be centered on aristocrats, but the housewives of "Good Girls" emit the same energy - at least at the start of the series.

Christina Hendricks (Beth Boland), Retta (Ruby Hill), and Mae Whitman (Annie Marks) play three suburbanites who face a tough breakup and begin a money laundering scheme. Like many criminal organizations, this venture leads these women into a world of murder and drugs until they are no longer recognizable. The "Jenna Bunds" series continues for six seasons and features other cast members such as Reno Wilson (Stan Hill), Manny Montana (Rio), and Matthew Lillard (Dean Borland).

Sheridan, creator of "The Mayor of Kingstown," is also responsible for bringing "The Tulsa King" to life. Sylvester Stallone leads the 2022 series as Dwight "General" Manfredi. Some are rehabilitated in prison. Others get out after 25 years and choose to build a criminal empire in Tulsa, Oklahoma, after being expelled from the Mafia. It's an old story. To be sure, Tulsa is not what one would call a typical hotbed of crime, but Manfredi is doing well with his new and eccentric crew.

"Tulsa King" features actors Andrea Savage (Stacy Beale), Martin Starr (Bodhi), Chris Caldovino (Goody Carangi), and Jay Hill (Tyson).
