Foldable phones are almost always more expensive than traditional devices. A notable exception is the new Nubia Flip 5G, which will be available in the US for the absurdly low price of $499. This is half the price of the latest Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5. While not exactly the same specs, it is close enough to make the Nubia Flip 5G competitive in the market. [Thankfully, the company has seen the value in bringing more affordable phones to the market and has attracted buyers who want to experience the world of foldable phones at a lower price.

Nubia has a mid-range Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chipset; a model with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage costs $499, while a model with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage costs $699.

These specs are very similar to the 2023 Motorola Razr, which had a launch price of $699. This is $200 more than the base model of the Nubia Flip 5G, further demonstrating how much value this phone offers, just launched by a lesser-known smartphone brand.

In terms of external screens, Nubia has included a 6.9-inch foldable OLED screen with FHD+ resolution and 443 PPI pixel density. It also features a fast refresh rate of 120 Hz. On the outside is a 1.43" circular external display for notifications and other important information.

Cameras are modest, but within expectations for a phone in this price range, with a 50MP primary camera and a 2MP secondary camera. On the front is a 16MP selfie camera.

Other notable features include a 4,310mAh battery and 33W wired charging. However, there is no wireless charging, so if you purchase this phone, you will need to stick with speedy wired charging.

Another notable omission is water resistance. While many foldable phones are not dustproof, most are waterproof. Another potential drawback to consider is that Nubia has not announced plans for software updates for the foldable, and the company is hit or miss, so keep that in mind if you decide to purchase this device.

The Nubia Flip 5 is currently available for pre-order through the company's website. Currently, there is a $20 discount on the price with the code "FLIP20". The device is expected to ship on April 23, 2024.
