Open AI Enhances ChatGPT with GPT-4 Turbo Upgrade

OpenAI has finally upgraded ChatGPT to run on the new GPT-4-Turbo model. This has resulted in improved inference capabilities, a more conversational tone, and better overall performance.

For the past few weeks, AI chatbots have been somewhat lazy and more direct in their responses, but OpenAI says the new upgrade addresses these issues.

The latest version of GPT-4-Turbo is only available to ChatGPT Plus subscribers. Those using the free version of the chatbot or without an account still only have GPT-3.5.

According to OpenAI, the updated model has "improved writing, math, logical reasoning, and coding capabilities" and will be more up-to-date with a knowledge cutoff of December 2023.

GPT-4-Turbo is the latest version of OpenAI's incredibly powerful GPT-4 family of large-scale language models. For the first time, it also includes AI vision capabilities, allowing users to analyze the content of video and live feeds.

It was released to developers earlier this week and is now included in OpenAI's flagship consumer and enterprise product, ChatGPT.

As an indication of how much better Turbo is compared to previous releases, OpenAI has returned to the top of the LMSys AI leaderboard. It is a chatbot arena where users can vote for the best output in a blind test of two models.

GPT-4 held the top spot for a long time until Anthropic released Claude 3 and fell to second place. Now it has regained the top spot, with users highlighting its natural response.

Having GPT-4-Turbo join ChatGPT so soon after its developer release is a strong signal that OpenAI is confident in its chatbot. It is also the worst possible AI model.

OpenAI researcher William Fedus said on X that "a better version is coming. This echoes CEO Sam Altman's comments that impressive and powerful AI models will be announced this year, which could include Sora and GPT-5.

OpenAI subjected the GPT-4-Turbo model to a series of evaluations and benchmarks prior to its release.

"When writing sentences using ChatGPT, answers will be more direct, less verbose, and more conversational," OpenAI said in a statement.

They plan to continue investing in making the model better and improving ChatGPT's performance; GPT-4-Turbo is already available on Microsoft Copilot for both free and for a fee.
