The defending champion was expected to be led by Willie Mullins' I Am Maximus and Gavin Cromwell's stayer Vanillier, who threatened Korach Rambler a year ago by breaking from the middle of the pack. But the gloomy April weather could shake things up.

Reducing the maximum number of runners from 40 to 34 is one of several safety measures implemented for the 2024 Grand National in the wake of last year's protests at Aintree Race Course and the death of Hill Sixteen. The first fence was moved nearly 60 yards from the start, and the eleventh fence, the one with the most horse falls on the course, was lowered two inches in height

These relatively minor changes provoked a predictable outcry from a faction of staunch traditionalists who would prefer to be reminded of the Grand National's history. The race was originally contested by fewer than 20 runners, and it was 23 years ago that only four runners (two of whom were re-runners) were entered from a field of 40 due to congestion.
