Galaxy AI will eventually be included in Samsung's older models - but there's a catch

It's been a bit of a roller coaster for owners of older Samsung devices eager to sample the wonders of Galaxy AI.

After promising to roll out clever artificial intelligence features on the Galaxy S23 series, Galaxy Z Fold 5, Z Flip 5, and Tab S9, Samsung stopped making the same promises on the S22 and earlier models.

However, it appears that Samsung will eventually offer AI features on earlier models as well. Initially, Samsung's press release announced an expansion of the languages supported by Galaxy AI, and expectations were high. After listing the currently supported devices, it concluded with the intriguing words: "More coming soon."

Now we may know exactly which devices are eligible for the Galaxy AI upgrade, 9to5Google, spotted a forum post on Samsung's Korean forums, outlining what devices with Galaxy AI will come with One UI 6.1. This includes the S22 family as well as the company's 2021 flagship device.

However, the post explains that pre-2023 devices will not get the exact same Galaxy AI experience as the current flagships; the Galaxy S23 FE already has a slightly paired-back version of Galaxy AI without the Instant Slow-Mo feature running a version, and it is this implementation of the software that Samsung's 2022 device will get. This covers the Galaxy S22 family, the Z Fold 4, the Z Flip 4, and the company's Tab S8 tablet. [If you own a 2021 device such as the Galaxy S21, Z Fold 3, or Z Flip 3, your Galaxy AI experience will be very limited, with only circle-to-search and "Magic Rewrite" support. The latter seems to be a mistranslation of "Generative Edit," but it makes sense since it is cloud-powered and does not have to rely on the fragile internals of the device.

Of course, it would be nice if all features were available on older Samsung devices, but a free upgrade would certainly be welcome, and Circle to Search is one of the better Galaxy AI features anyway. Furthermore, the power of Genetic Edit seemed like science fiction in January 2021 when the S21 was unveiled to the world, a free update that most people would have been very happy with at the time.

According to forum postings, the update is scheduled to take place in early May. However, since this insight comes from a Korean forum, the global update may take a little longer.
