At first I thought it was an April Fool's joke, but lo and behold, the streaming service is indeed releasing a film focused on this sugary toaster treat. Even more shocking, from the first trailer, this could be one of the best Netflix movies of the year.

The comedy marks the directorial debut of the legendary Jerry Seinfeld, and the beloved comic also stars as Bob Cabana, a Kellogg's executive who dreams of changing breakfast forever by creating the world's first toaster pastry.

The cast list is packed with a wealth of talent, including Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan, Hugh Grant (as Tony the Tiger), Amy Schumer, Peter Dinklage, and Christian Slater. From the piles of casting sheets, it appears that Jerry has called in some favors for the film.

Netflix describes the film as: "A tale of ambition, betrayal, sugar, and a menacing milkman," Netflix explains, and on the surface it seems pretty hard to take "Unfrosted" seriously. But from our first look, the film's creators are well aware of that fact and steer clear of the skid. Everything about the first trailer suggests a high-concept film that has a lot of fun with its ridiculous premise.

The film appears to be a parody of recent biopics that focus on the creation of a product/brand, such as "Blackberry," "Founder," and "Air," but the idea comes from a joke that Jerry Seinfeld told on the standup set It is clear from the fact that "Unfrost" knows exactly what it is. The Netflix film won't be competing at next year's Academy Awards, but like the Pop Tart itself, it's a high-energy, sugar-laden delight that will make up for its lack of nutrition with its smooth sweetness.

Now, let's see if "Unfrosted: The Pop-Tarts Story" can stick the landing and strike the right comedic balance. The film will be available on Netflix on Friday, May 3, so it won't be long before we can judge for ourselves.
