Colin Farrell's gangster Oz Cobb, a.k.a. Penguin, is one of the breakout characters in Matt Reeves' 2022 blockbuster "Batman," and Penguin's highly anticipated solo miniseries, announced two years ago, will premiere this fall at Max for its series premiere. The first trailer has finally been released ahead of the series premiere this fall at Max.

Farrell disappeared as the Penguin in "The Batman," but the focus was clearly on the title character, played by Robert Pattinson, and the Penguin was just one of several villains and other familiar figures in the Batman mythos. In "Batman," Penguin worked for crime boss Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), primarily running Falcone's club, the Iceberg Lounge, where he worked with Selina Kyle (Zoe Kravitz), aka Catwoman. In "Batman," Penguin's car chase scene is particularly memorable, but otherwise the spotlight is on other characters.

That didn't prevent Farrell from giving an impressive performance, fully immersing himself in the role, which is affected by the various prosthetics and the tough guy's Gotham City accent (which sounds like a mix of Chicago and New York). In "The Penguin," set a week after "Batman," the Penguin seems to be in power now that Falcone has been eliminated.

In the new trailer, the Penguin monologues to a stranger and tells the story of a neighborhood gangster who was feted as a hero in his youth and even paraded after his death. A bit like Ray Liotta's opening narration in Goodfellas, it would not be out of place to hear Penguin say, "When I can remember, I always wanted to be in a gang."

Penguin's monologue is interspersed with scenes of violence, including striking footage of co-star Christine Milioti, who plays Falcone's daughter Sofia, screaming in agony. Other series regulars include Rhenzy Feliz, Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Deirdre O'Connell, Clancy Brown, and Michael Zegen.

"The Penguin" is billed as "the next chapter in the Batman saga." This means that the series will likely set up other characters and storylines for future Batman content, including the "Batman - Part II" movie, scheduled for release on October 2, 2026. That's a long time to wait, but "The Penguin" should give Batman fans plenty to look forward to and speculate about until then.
