Pre-orders for the Apple Vision Pro are now available ahead of the iPhone maker's highly anticipated launch of the mixed reality headset on February 2. The Vision Pro product page reveals configurations, pricing, and accessories, and a new specs page reveals answers to lingering questions. The new specs page answers some lingering questions. Not surprisingly, getting all the special equipment for the Vision Pro is quite an expense - and that's on top of the headset's hefty starting price of $3,499.

First, if you upgrade the Vision Pro's storage to 512GB, the price jumps to $3,699; 1TB is $3,899. (The $3,499 base model comes with 256GB of storage.) Also, it wouldn't be an Apple product without a catalog of expensive accessories.

Want to take your Vision Pro with you? A travel case costs $199. According to Apple, if you need to go mobile, the Vision Pro's external battery pack will only last two hours, but can be augmented with a $49.95 Belkin battery holder that attaches to your belt. Unlike the Meta Quest, the Vision Pro does not allow you to wear glasses. Since it is not possible to wear them, an optical insert is required to actually see with the expensive headset in place. The reader costs $99, and the lenses with power are $149. Both are made by Zeiss and attach magnetically to the inside of the Vision Pro.

If you want to add AppleCare Plus coverage, it is an additional $499 for two years of coverage. However, even with the coverage plan, you will still pay $299 for each repair.

See below for the full lineup of Vision Pro accessories and their prices.

As mentioned above, adding a 2-year AppleCare Plus warranty adds another $499. Also, based on the estimated repair costs listed on the Apple Vision Pro service page, it may be worth paying for peace of mind for some early adopters. Otherwise, they may end up paying a lot of money in the long run.

There are two categories of repairs: $799 for "cracked cover glass" and $2,399 for "other damage." This means that if your Vision Pro headset falls over and cracks the windshield and causes other damage inside, you will be charged $3,198, or about 91% of the cost of a new headset.

If you are particularly clumsy, rest assured that the AppleCare Plus plan covers an "unlimited" number of accidents during the term. This coverage includes "unexpected and unintentional external events," including spilling liquids or dropping your device.

It can be tempting to skimp on the extended warranty with shiny new hardware to keep the final price down. Not only is first-generation hardware typically less reliable than subsequent hardware (to cite an example, Apple has been making the best iPhones for over 15 years and its flagship smartphones are extremely reliable), but when dealing with hardware designed to cover eye it is extremely important not to overlook the possibility of accidental damage.
