Apple Vision Pro Sells Out in Weekend Reservations Despite $3,500 Price Tag

The Apple Vision Pro headset is now available for pre-order ahead of its February 2 release. While not in as high demand as Apple's other devices, it is clear that people are not shying away from the $3,500 asking price for the spatial computing headset, and the device sold out over the weekend.

According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple sold between 160,000 and 180,000 headsets during the entire pre-order weekend. This is well above previous estimates of between 60,000 and 80,000 units.

All Vision Pro models (the $3,499 256GB model, the $3,699 512GB model, and the $3,899 1TB model) are currently on back order and are expected to ship between March 4 and March 11.

But while this seems like nothing but good news for Apple, Kuo explained that demand could drop off significantly after early adopters are satisfied, with iPhone orders "steadily increasing in shipping time from 24 to 48 hours after pre-orders begin." In contrast, Vision Pro shipping times have remained the same 48 hours after orders begin.

Looking further ahead, Kuo believes that reaching 500,000 Vision Pro shipments "will not be difficult" for Apple.

"But after the initial sellout, demand tapers off quickly, so it's important to carefully monitor demand and application updates in other markets to assess changes in demand," he added.

While Vision Pro is clearly the next big bet for Apple, it is still a very niche product. Kuo pointed out that Apple's user base is over 1.2 billion active users, and 500,000 headsets is nothing compared to the iPhone, iPad, and MacBook.

Of course, Vision Pro is still a first-generation device, and we have already heard of some teething problems. Allegedly, the device's virtual keyboard needs improvement, and the cost of potential repairs would be even more enormous. However, when "Tom's Guide" tried out the Vision Pro in person, they found that using the device was "chock-full of 'wow' moments."

The Vision Pro will initially be available only in the United States. Other countries will follow, but Apple has not provided details on when and where it will be available.
