Netflix Scores One of HBO's Most Iconic Shows - Hello "Sex and the City"

Netflix is adding another classic licensed show to its catalog.

According to The New York Times, the company recently signed a licensing deal with Netflix to bring the iconic series "Sex and the City" to the streaming platform, with all six seasons available on Netflix beginning April 2024 and will be available on Netflix beginning in April 2024. This decision is part of Warner Bros. Discovery's strategy to continue licensing a portion of its collection of legacy programming to other streaming services.

This is the latest agreement between Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery over HBO programming. Six Feet Under, Band of Brothers, Insecure, and Ballers are currently available on Netflix. But "Sex and the City," one of HBO's most iconic series, has so far garnered the most attention of them all.

"Sex and the City" originally ran from 1998 to 2004. Created by Darren Star and based on the book by Candace Bushnell, the show followed four friends as they navigated careers, relationships, and life in New York City.

At the center is Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), who writes a newspaper column about relationships in New York, from which the show takes its name. Kim Cattrall takes on the role of her friend Samantha Jones, a bold PR executive with an unapologetic attitude toward sex. Kristin Davis is Charlotte York, a traditional art dealer seeking a fairy-tale marriage. And Cynthia Nixon plays Miranda Hobbs, a career-focused lawyer who balances her professional and personal life.

The show features four women tackling the complexities of urban life, relationships, and, of course, sex life, in incredibly raw conversations and striking scenes. The show became a cultural touchstone over the years, eventually spawning the 2021 Max Original Series "And So It Goes."

When "Sex and the City" comes to Netflix, fans will be able to stream all of Carrie's adventures, but the sequel series "And Just Like That" will be a Max exclusive for now. That way, new viewers who learned about the OG series on Netflix will be able to watch the gang's next film on Max.

Max's chief content officer, Casey Bloys, said the Netflix licensing deal has increased the audience for his service.

As for Netflix, it has had success with licensed legacy shows, most notably "Suits" last year.
