iPhone 16 Pro may outperform MacBook in some tests - what we know

The power of the iPhone 16 Pro's A18 Pro chip may be approaching that of Apple's laptop, if the claims of Nguyen Phi Hung, leaked on X/Twitter, are accurate.

Nguyen claims that the A18 Pro chip scored 3,500 single-core and 8,200 multi-core on Geekbench 6, a popular multi-platform benchmarking app. However, in a second tweet, they state that the 3,500 result is an "absolute maximum," suggesting that perhaps Apple may lower this performance in the final product to balance computing output with battery consumption and heat generation.

If the next iPhone achieves these numbers, it could theoretically outperform not only this year's iPhone 15 Pro but also several MacBooks, including the current top-of-the-line MacBook Pro with the M3 Max chip. It also crushes the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, currently the top performer on the Android side of the smartphone market.

The multi-core score is where the A18's notional score falls down and is easily overtaken by Apple's laptop and its high total core count. In other words, unless you are using older hardware, the upcoming iPhone is not likely to replace your laptop just yet.

The A18 Pro chip is believed to use the same 3-nanometer process as the A17 Pro in the iPhone 15 Pro model, albeit upgraded. the basic A18 expected to be in the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus chip may also use a 3nm process, a significant upgrade from the 4nm A16 chip in the base iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus.

According to other rumors, the iPhone 16 standard mode is expected to have more RAM and faster WiFi 6E Internet support. The Pro model, on the other hand, could have larger (but presumably slower) storage capacities of up to 2 TB.

For the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max, we imagine all will be revealed in September, Apple's usual iPhone launch month. Along with these performance upgrades, all models will have a new capture button, and the Pro may see further camera advancements.
