Forget the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 - a new triple foldable phone could be added

Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 6 could overshadow Samsung's new type of foldable this year, which, if true, could revitalize Samsung's position in the foldable phone market.

Tipster Revegnus (@Tech_Reve) claims in a new Tweet/X post that Samsung is considering bringing out a "tri-fold" phone this year. It is not widely known that Samsung is working on a new folding form factor. But the fact that it could appear so soon is surprising.

As with most of the best folding phones, the general idea of Samsung's tri-fold phone is that you can have a large-screen device in a smartphone form factor. However, this model could be even larger than the Z Fold 6.

Previous patents have revealed that the phone may be able to sense what state the screen is in thanks to a sensor on the hinge. This means that content would only be displayed on the screen that is actively in use, while features such as flex mode could take advantage of additional displays.

However, one of the major threats to Samsung's three-fold plan mentioned by Levegnas is Huawei. While not a significant competitor in the UK, and not a competitor at all in the US since the deal is banned, Huawei is still a big player elsewhere, especially with its foldable Mate X series. And according to Revegnus, it could introduce its own triple foldable to the world in late 2024, meaning that Samsung will need to move quickly if it wants the honor of being first to market.

Being first in a particular technology is gratifying for a company. But seeing as how Samsung's first Galaxy Fold suffered from build issues (while losing the crown of first foldable phone to the completely forgotten Royole FlexPai), if Samsung is going to do something important right the first time, I think I speak for all cell phone buyers when I say that being a little late to the party with a triple foldable doesn't matter.

Especially if its obvious main rival is Huawei. Even if Samsung waits until next year to bring out this supposed device, since the Chinese giant is locked out of using Google apps as well as the U.S., it will be the first experience of a three-part folderble for virtually most customers. [There are currently no rumors that the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 will be announced in about six months.

Based on this one rumor alone, it is difficult to say with certainty when this Samsung tri-fold phone will appear, but perhaps we will at least see a teaser of it at this year's Galaxy Unpacked while Samsung makes final adjustments.
