Shogun" is my early favorite, best show of the year.

My enthusiasm for the upcoming FX show Shogun is well known. Not only is this miniseries one of the most anticipated shows of 2024, but it is also on my personal list of most anticipated shows of the year: the spiritual successor to the highly successful 1980 miniseries based on the 1975 novel of the same name, the show has made an incredible impression with every new trailer it has released. has made an unbelievable impression.

But some are getting more than trailers: the first two episodes of the 10-part limited series will air on FX on February 27 and arrive on Hulu the next day, but some critics have already reviewed the show in its entirety.

And the reviews are impressive: after 17 critics' reviews, the show has a perfect 100% "fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The critics' scores are also impressive, with the lowest score being 3.5 out of 5, and the highest being an impressive 7 out of 10.

In short, everyone likes the film.

So let's see what the critics are saying and why I'm recommending "Shogun" as the best show of 2024. In fact, I think it could be the next "Game of Thrones."

When I wrote about why I was excited about the show, I immediately compared it to HBO's hit "Game of Thrones." The trailer for the miniseries featured the same violence, political gamesmanship, and conversations between people in the room that made the early seasons of "Game of Thrones" so great, and given the scope of "Shogun," the comparison felt natural.

The comparison may be spot on as far as early reviews are concerned. Nick Clark of the London Evening Standard called it a "prestige drama"; Screen Rant's Mae Abdulbaki called it "a priority viewing" and praised its dazzling political intrigue.

There also seems to be no shortage of excellent dialogue, with Decider's Meghan O'Keefe calling the battle of words a "poetry contest." In any case, she describes the show as "an extravagant historical soap opera, full of depth and spectacle." It is like an early "Game of Thrones."

When multiple reviews describe a television show as a "masterpiece," it is probably one of the best shows of the year. Especially when you add the expectation from these early reviews that this will be prestige television available for reserved viewing.

Now it remains to be seen if viewers will be willing to wait for this show. If so, "Shogun" will be a hit, perhaps the biggest hit of the year. If audiences praise the show, it could be a contender for best show of 2024.
