Eight new "Max" films over 90% at Rotten Tomatoes.

March is here and with it comes some great new movies on Max. Our pick for the best streaming service always adds a huge amount of new shows and movies each month, and March 2024 is no different.

However, not all movies are created equal, and there is a lot to sift through with a complete list of everything coming to Max this month. So we've compiled a list of the best of the best. This month we include the original "King Kong" from 1933, a true classic, and the critically acclaimed "Farewell." And starting March 8, you can watch Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper's wonderful remake of "A Star Is Born."

All of the films on this list have a Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer rating of 90% or higher, meaning they have received almost universal acclaim. If it is on this list, you know it is a must-see film. So without further ado, let's take a look at the eight best new Max movies that received a 90% or higher rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Although it looks dated now, the special effects in "King Kong" were considered groundbreaking at the time. The ability to combine stop-motion animation with live-action cinematography to create a monster on such a large scale is still a marvel to this day, even if the stop-motion Kong is a bit jarring to the modern eye. [Most people are probably familiar with the plot of "King Kong," in which Fay Wray plays the femme fatale Ann Darrow and Robert Armstrong plays filmmaker-turned-explorer Carl Denham, at this point, even if they have not seen the film. Denham takes Darrow to Skull Island, an island trapped in prehistoric times. There they capture King Kong, a giant gorilla-like creature, and bring him back to New York City. Who survives this iconic horror tale remains to be seen, but the decision is ultimately fatal.

"A Parting Shot" is perhaps best known for being the breakout film of several parties. The film is based in part on the life of director Lulu Wang, who was nominated for numerous awards for the film and its screenplay.

Awafina plays Bili Wang, a Chinese-American who learns at the beginning of the film that her grandmother Nai Nai (Zhao Shu Chin) is dying. Instead of freely telling Nai Nai or processing their grief as she would like, however, her family decides not to tell Nai Nai of her fatal illness. The film is an insightful portrait not only of the grieving process, but also of the differences between Western and Chinese family values. Aside from Wang's screenplay, "Separation" was Shu Zhen's American film debut and was also highly acclaimed for the award-winning breakthrough performance of Akwafina as Bili.

Genre Comedy Drama Rotten Tomatoes Score: 97 In 2009, Oscar Grant III was shot and killed by Bay Area Rapid Transit police at Oakland's Fruitvale Station. Grant and several others were taken into custody by BART police after a fight was reported. While in custody, Grant was kneecapped in the head by BART officer Anthony Pirone, and then officer Johannes Mehserle shot Grant in the head. The incident was filmed by several bystanders' cell phones and eventually led to rioting and protests after Mehserle was convicted of manslaughter, though not murder.

However, "Fruitvale Station" is about much more than that. Instead, director Ryan Coogler paints a whole picture of one man in the last 24 hours of his life before his life was shockingly taken from him. The film was not only Coogler's feature directorial debut, but also a breakthrough moment for fellow USC graduate Ludwig Göransson. Michael B. Jordan also appeared in the film as Grant, reviving his acting career. The three would team up again for "Black Panther," and "Fruitvale Station" was a rare glimpse into the chemistry of this group of filmmaking collaborators.

This film may be based on a musical based on a novel, but I promise you that it is an excellent film adaptation. It won eight awards, including Best Actress for Liza Minnelli, who played Sally Bowles, and Best Supporting Actor for Joel Grey, who played the emcee.

The film, starring Minnelli as Bowles, tells the story of a young promiscuous American woman new to Berlin in 1931 who performs at the "Kit Kat Club" nightclub. But just as important, "Cabaret" depicts life in Berlin at the end of the Weimar Republic, before the German occupation by the Nazi Party.

Although the film takes place outside the "Kit Kat Club," almost all of the musical numbers take place inside the nightclub. Don't miss this iconic musical while it is available on Max.

Another example of a musical being based on multiple adaptations, 2018's The Birth of a Star is the third remake of the 1937 romance drama. You would think that would mean that no one has gotten it right yet, but you would be wrong. The original won two Oscars out of eight nominations, the 1954 remake did not win an Oscar but was nominated six times, and the 1976 remake won once out of four nominations.

So it is perhaps not surprising that this remake won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for the now iconic "Shallow," one of its eight Oscar nominations.

This version of the story stars Bradley Cooper as Jackson "Jack" Maine, a famous country star with a serious addiction problem. He meets a 31-year-old waitress, Allie (Lady Gaga), at a bar, sees her sing, and encourages her to pursue a career in singing and songwriting. As her career grows, the two become romantically involved, and what follows is a sad romantic drama.

The term "tour de force" is often used to describe this film, but I can't think of a better word to describe it. Even just watching the trailer, you are emotionally invested in the story. And the film lived up to the expectations of the trailer and was nominated for dozens of Academy Awards, including several.

The film is also based on an incredible true story. James Franco plays amateur climber Aron Ralston in "127 Hours," the true story of how he was trapped by boulders in a canyon for 127 hours. The trailer - thankfully - hides the film's big twist, so I'm not going to spoil it here. I'll let you watch the film and find out.

Not to be confused with the 2017 Netflix series of the same name, this satirical black comedy (promise, no pun intended) tells the story of racial tensions reaching a boiling point at a fictional Ivy League university. While its subject matter deserves serious analysis and discussion, the film is undeniably funny.

In Dear White People, Tessa Thompson plays Samantha "Sam" White. She offends her white classmates and the school by criticizing their racist behavior. She does most of this criticism on her radio show "Dear White People" and in her self-published book "Ebony and Ivy." This discomfort eventually reaches a boiling point, but not before a witty and incendiary examination of what many blacks experience in American society.

Fans of "Uncut Gems" and "The Curse" should check out the previous films now that they are available on Max. The fifth and, as of now, last film from the Safdie brothers, "Good Time" stars Robert Pattinson as Connie Nikas, a small-time New York villain who tries to free her developmentally disabled brother Nick (Benny Safdie) from police custody. The problem is that Connie is a wanted criminal. Connie is a wanted criminal.

Fans of the Safdie brothers will appreciate the nervous tension that will characterize the "uncut gem" of 2019, but those who don't may find that aspect of the film unbearable. Regardless, Pattinson's performance is noteworthy. The Hollywood Reporter's David Rooney compares it to Al Pacino's performance in Dog Day Afternoon, which is high praise.
