Android TV Shop is a new way to buy and rent a TV or movie — here's where to find it

Android TV may be a bit outdated, but it's still a great smart TV interface, and now Google is making it even better.

Google has announced that it is introducing an all-new Shop tab to Android TV. This Shop tab will replace the familiar Google Play Movie and TV app on Android smartphones.

The purpose of the Shop tab is twofold. First, it is a hub for all the latest movies available for purchase on Video on Demand. But it is not just about movies offered by Google. The Shop tab pulls in movies available from all connected streaming services and Google TV, so all movies available for rent or purchase are available in the same place.

It also does the same for content you already own: everything you have purchased with your Google account will appear in the "Library" section of the "Shop" tab. This includes purchases made on YouTube, Google TV, Android TV devices, and Google TV mobile apps. From the Shop tab, you can watch these movies in your library with the click of a button.

The Shop tab is not only visible on Android TV; the Google TV app on Android phones and tablets also has a Shop tab that allows you to buy or rent the latest movies, or download movies you already own to watch in your spare time.

According to Google, the Shop tab will begin rolling out on Android TV devices over the next few weeks. The feature will be available worldwide, not just in the U.S., but Google says some features may not be available in all countries and languages.

If you need to find this feature on Android TV, you will find it right next to the Home tab; on the Google TV mobile app, it is next to the "For You" tab.

One place Google has not explicitly stated that the Shop tab will appear is on Google TV. This is Google's new smart TV interface, which is slowly replacing Android TV.

Both Android TV and Google TV run on the Android TV OS and are updated via Android TV OS 14, but they do not share the same user interface or the same features. And Google TV was conspicuously absent from Google's announcement, specifically mentioning Android TV and the Google TV app for mobile devices.

My guess is that Google is saving this feature for a later Google TV; the Google TV home screen was just redesigned in February and they don't want to change it yet. If the Shop tab is a hit among Android TV users, it will eventually be included in Google's top-of-the-line smart TV platform.
