PS5 and Xbox Series x Inventory Disaster - Blame These blame1 Parts

Both the PS5 and Xbox Series X have faced persistent inventory problems since their launch, and restocking of either console has often been a complete disaster due to duff bots and server crashes, with retailers' websites caving in due to overwhelming demand.

We have known for some time that the shortage of next-generation consoles is thanks to the global chip shortage. But it turns out that some of the components causing the biggest headaches for Sony and Microsoft cost as little as $1.

Bloomberg reports that it is not a shortage of expensive parts that is causing inventory problems, but rather that the small inventories of PS5 and Xbox Series X are due to cheap parts available in large quantities at relatively low cost. These parts typically include overlooked components such as display drivers and small power management chips.

Because these parts were previously considered commonplace and inexpensive, manufacturers regularly ordered thousands of them without problems. If the supply chain is affected and demand does not decrease, a bottleneck occurs and suddenly these insignificant parts become highly sought after.

The Bloomberg study also found that the problem was compounded by outdated production methods and a significant increase in chip orders from industries that previously had little need for these hardware components.

Curiously, it is also claimed that companies assumed that the shutdowns following the global COVID-19 pandemic would actually reduce demand for computer-related products. Not surprisingly, the past year and a half has seen an explosion in demand for high-tech products as people look for ways to enjoy their homes.

The real kicker for those still looking for a PS5 or Xbox Series X (or other tech products with limited availability, such as Nvidia GeForce RTX 30 series graphics cards) is that production lines will be expanded in the coming months unlikely.

Bloomberg reports that the companies that manufacture these components are not interested in modifying their existing supply lines. This means that inventory shortages for the PS5 and Xbox Series X will continue throughout the year, and could even get worst as the holiday season approaches.

While this is not welcome news for those looking to purchase next-generation consoles, we are tracking the restocking of the PS5 and Xbox Series X in our dedicated buying guide to give you an advantage when restocking occurs.
