The Twitter tipster adds that Resident Evil 7, 8, and 9 have interwoven stories, which is one of the reasons Capcom is looking to discontinue the franchise's numbered titles in the future. The goal is to allow independent, "self-contained stories" to be told, rather than planning a series of connected stories over several games.

This is certainly a strong possibility, and is consistent with the naming conventions we have seen recently. In Japan, the Japanese title is "Resident Evil"; the Japanese title for "Resident Evil 7: Resident Evil" is "Resident Evil 7: Resident Evil."

Since "Resident Evil 8" is already better known than "Resident Evil 7 Resident Evil", it is possible that Capcom is paving the way for a numbered title after "Resident Evil 9".
