The blue Nintendo Switch Lite will appear on May 5 - or is it purple?

Nintendo is refreshing its hardware lineup for spring by adding a new color to its Nintendo Switch Lite handheld gaming console. This new color is named "Blue," and it is exactly what you might imagine it to be. That is, unless someone on the Internet claims that it's actually purple.

The new color, announced on Nintendo's official Twitter account, is named "Blue," which one would think would nip speculation in the bud. But like the Indigo Gamecube before it, fans are debating whether it is actually blue or just a slightly disconcerting purple.

The Switch Lite was initially released in turquoise, yellow, and gray. A few months later, coral was added. The exact date varies by region, but we should be getting the blue variant next month.

The new blue Switch Lite will sell for the regular price of $199.99 / £199.99 / $329.95 Australian. It will be available in the UK on May 7 and in the US and Australia on May 21. Nintendo's website does not appear to be taking reservations, so those interested will have to try their luck on the release date.

The May 21 release date is the same day Miitopia debuts. This fantasy sim was announced at the Nintendo Direct in February. There are many other titles to look forward to, and those who have not yet bought into the Nintendo ecosystem may find their wallets reaching for them.

Two NES Detective Club titles are expected in May, a new Mario Gold title in June, and the Fall Guys and The Outer Wilds. Also, if recent rumors are correct, "Mario Kart 9" may be coming to the Nintendo Switch.

The good news for Nintendo fans is that the company is looking to develop more original IP rather than relying too heavily on Mario and Zelda titles. Earlier this week, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa emphasized that in order to remain competitive and keep content fresh, the company will "focus on creating new game series as well as long-selling titles like Mario and Zelda."

With the impending Nintendo Switch shortage creeping up later this year, the blue Switch Lite is a great excuse to get a console before it becomes as hard to find as the PS5 or Xbox Series X
