Nintendo Switch Pro with OLED display can actually happen — here's why

Rumors surrounding the possibility of a Nintendo Switch Pro with an OLED panel were not unfounded, it seems. Steven V. Abramson, president and CEO of Universal Display Corporation,

stated that "Nintendo has chosen an OLED screen for the new Switch Pro because OLED offers the advantages of high contrast and fast response time."

The transcript, discovered by a Spawn Wave Twitter user, also mentions Samsung Display, and curiously, the possibility that the next Nintendo Switch console will feature a Samsung 7-inch OLED display This was after a series of rumors surrounding.

"Samsung Display announced that it will aggressively expand its OLED presence in the gaming, smartphone, and laptop markets.

Currently, Samsung is one of many companies working with Universal Display Corp on OLED technology used in flagship devices.

Nintendo has not confirmed the above exactly, so we cannot yet take this as official confirmation. However, when so many rumors coincide with an investor conference call, one has to wonder if an official announcement is on the way.

However, Nintendo has recently teased its "next platform" after the Switch, making it almost certain that the company is working on a new gaming console. However, it is unclear whether the console in question is an upgraded version of the existing Nintendo Switch console or if the company is planning an entirely new device.

Another leak revealed what appears to be firmware code that seems to confirm that the Switch Pro will target 4K gaming in docked mode. Additionally, we recently discovered a new Nintendo patent indicating that the new Switch Pro may feature an improved Joy-Con controller.

Sadly, even if Nintendo were to adopt a new OLED display panel for its upcoming console, the panel is expected to have a resolution of only 720p, meaning that HD and 4K gaming in handheld mode will not be possible.

With rumors of a Nintendo Switch Pro increasingly swirling, we cautiously expect it could be announced in some form this year. However, Nintendo has been fairly tight-lipped about its plans for the console, so while the Switch Pro may be in development, it may not be released for another year or so.
