LG's new ThinQ washer can sense the fabric, so it won't ruin your clothes

When I volunteer to do laundry, my wife always tells me to wash my own clothes separately to avoid accidentally staining delicate garments; LG's new ThinQ washer and clothes dryer uses a combination of AI and sensors to adjust various wash cycles on the fly, sorting before washing potentially eliminating mistakes. A matching dryer would also ensure that clothes are not accidentally sized too small, as the washer would automatically send that data to the dryer.

Both the washer and dryer will be available in North America in the first half of 2020, but pricing has not yet been announced.

Like most washing machines, the LG ThinQ has a variety of presets, including heavy duty, bedding, delicate, and permanent press. However, once the washer determines the type of laundry, either by sensors embedded in the drum or by the size of the laundry, it adjusts its presets based on LG's accumulated data. The washer also determines the amount of detergent needed to properly clean the laundry. [The washer has a Wi-Fi connection and can send information about the laundry to the dryer. The Wi-Fi connection can also be used with LG's ThinQ app to create custom wash cycles and download them to the washer; the Wi-Fi connection can also be used with Amazon's Dash Replenishment service, which can also be used in conjunction with the Replenishment service.

We are interested to see how LG's AI works in the real world. According to the company, it can make clothes last up to 15% longer. It would also enable more efficient energy use. And it would mean that more laundry could be done.
