In GDC2020 there is no PS5: Sony just dropped out

GDC 2020 joins the list of events that will not see the PS5. A day after pulling out of PAX East 2020 due to Coronavirus concerns, Sony, along with Facebook and its Oculus VR brand, has officially pulled out of this year's Game Developers Conference.

In a statement to Gamesindustry.biz, Sony wrote, "Due to growing concerns related to COVID-19, also known as the coronavirus, we have made the difficult decision to cancel our participation in the Game Developers Conference."

The same day, Chris Pruett, Director of Content Ecosystems at Oculus, announced in a blog post that Facebook's AR/VR and games teams would not be attending GDC 2020, also citing concerns about the coronavirus.

"We will still be sharing the exciting announcements we had planned for the show in digital formats, including video and online Q&A," Pruett wrote, noting that Oculus fans should look forward to new news via live stream

GDC and PAX East are the latest in a series of major trade show events affected by the Wuhan coronavirus, which has killed more than 2,100 people worldwide, according to CNN. Even Mobile World Congress, the world's largest cell phone trade show, was canceled this month after major vendors, including Sony, pulled out of exhibiting due to safety concerns.

With Sony not exhibiting at GDC or PAX East, speculation continues to fly as to when the PS5 launch event will take place; several dates that were rumored to take place in February never materialized, but Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki recently announced during an earnings call that Sony's strategy would be "on par with the past."
