Apple's new over-ear headphones will reportedly feature interchangeable pads and will be offered in two different base models.

The iPhone maker is looking to reclaim the title of Bose's best headphones, and details of its over-ear headphones with active noise cancellation were recently leaked.According to the latest rumors coming from Bloomberg, Apple's first in-house branded will come in a high-fashion version and a fitness-focused version.

According to Bloomberg's sources, both will feature interchangeable earpads and headphone pads.

The more upscale variant of Apple's headphones will be made of "leather-like fabric," while the sportier pair should feature more "breathable materials." For all we know, this could be a Bose killer, with reports that Apple's mysterious AirPods X are for the fitness-minded.

However, the only Bose device in existence with interchangeable parts is the niche Bose Frames. Apple's plan is rather to modularize its over-ear headphones using magnetics. According to those who have seen prototypes, the ear pads and headband padding will be interchangeable.

According to Bloomberg's sources, Apple's headphones will have a "retro" aesthetic, with rotating oval ear cups connected to the headband by a thin metal arm. The arm extends from the top rather than the sides of the headphones, not unlike the category-leading Bose 700.

Apple's first non-Beats over-ear headphones could be announced during the WWDC 2020 online event, where the MacBook Air 2020 and iOS 14 would be announced.

According to leaker Jon Prosser, the headphones will also be priced around $350, and Prosser also said that Apple's noise-canceling headphones are a crucial part of its efforts to phase out the Beats by Dre brand rationalized, but Apple has since denied the rumor.
