PS5SSD is so fast that developers have to redesign the game

We've heard a lot about the PS5's technical wonders from Sony and its associated developers. Once again, a testimonial from a senior Epic Games staffer has appeared, this time full of praise focused on the new console's SSD.

VG247 (via TechRadar) reports that the custom SSD storage offered by the next-generation PlayStation is "really something special," according to Nick Penwarden, VP of Engineering at Epic Games.

"The ability to stream content at extreme speeds will allow developers to create denser, more detailed environments and change the way we think about streaming content," Penwarden continued.

"It's so impactful that we've rewritten the core I/O subsystem of the Unreal Engine with PlayStation 5 in mind.

The assertion that developers need to rethink how they create games and game engines for PS5 supports what Sony said in its Road to PS5 presentation. While this was very technical and left many gamers cold, bold claims were made about how the PS5's SSD speed will revolutionize level design.

The increased loading speed will theoretically allow developers to build levels as they wish, eliminating the need to use arbitrary parts of the environment, such as elevators or narrow corridors, to break up graphically-intensive areas.

Penwarden also had nothing but praise for the rest of the PS5's hardware, stating that the console "represents a huge leap forward in both computing and graphics performance."

While this is certainly true when compared to the PS4, the PS5 is also more powerful than the Xbox Series X. With its lower computing output compared to the Series X, Sony will likely rely on other features of the console, such as 3D audio and the tactile capabilities of the new DualSense controller.

But Xbox fans need not be jealous; Tim Sweeney, founder and CEO of Epic Games, posted on Twitter that the Unreal Engine changes will also help improve the Xbox Series X and other platforms

.

The PS5 and Xbox Series X will go head-to-head when they hit retail store shelves around November, but until then, a series of events are coming up that will reveal more details about the console and its launch titles. Sony's upcoming PS5 gaming event, which has been postponed in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, should tell us what we can expect to play on the PS5 before the end of the year. Xbox will also be holding an exclusive event in July to showcase its anticipated titles, including Halo Infinite.
