iOS14 gives a killer upgrade to your AirPods

A new feature in iOS 14 could help AirPods keep their batteries in optimal condition longer, potentially extending the life of the wireless buds.

As shown in a screenshot taken by iOS engineer Hüseyin İyibaş and posted on Twitter, Apple's iOS 14 beta version features optimized battery charging for wireless earbuds. iOS 13 is installed iPhone or a MacBook with macOS Catalina installed, you may have already seen something like this, but this is a first for Apple audio devices.

Optimized Battery Charging is Apple's smart charging option that learns which times of the day you typically use your device and charges it in two stages: when you first plug in your iPhone or MacBook, it charges up to 80%, then stops The last 20% is a "charge" stage where the software will tell you how much you need to charge your device. The last 20% is only charged for an hour or two before the software decides you are about to pick it up and use it again.

The advantage of this method is that the battery stays fully charged for a much shorter time. This reduces the strain on the battery and keeps its capacity close to the capacity promised by the manufacturer, thus extending the battery's estimated life as long as possible.

The addition of this option to Apple's popular AirPods is a welcome upgrade, assuming they work as intended. Even if you plan to ditch your AirPods the moment the new generation AirPods are released, AirPods 3 is still said to be a year away.

iOS 14 brings other AirPods benefits: the AirPods Pro will support spatial audio; the AirPods Pro will support the AirPods 3, which will support the AirPods 3, and the AirPods 4, which will support the AirPods 3. This, along with Dolby Atmos support, provides a virtual surround experience when watching movies and other content, with AirPods Pro sensing head movement and adjusting sound accordingly. Additionally, AirPods Pro automatically switches between Apple devices when playing media on them, without the need to turn the Bluetooth connection off and on.
