For a long time it has been rumored, anticipated, and generally speculated that a new Fable game is in the works and could be coming to the Xbox Series X.

But now, after a long and difficult search for a new Fable game, the Xbox has decided to make a new Fable game, and a new Perfect Dark game.

This is because Xbox General Manager Aaron Greenberg has kicked off speculation that a new Fable game (let's call it Fable 4) and a new Perfect Dark game could be announced at Microsoft's "Xbox 20/20" event in July.

Tom Warren, a journalist at The Verge, has two seemingly inactive accounts on Twitter, @fable and @PerfectDarkGame, one of which is owned by a Microsoft employee and the other by a Microsoft The speculation was fueled by the fact that the accounts were followed by an account with an address registered to This led Warren and others to chew on the idea that these were accounts set up prior to the announcement of the two games. [But Greenberg tweeted to Warren: "I know everyone is hungry for news, sorry to get your hopes up. These accounts have been inactive for years and it is standard practice to secure the IP's social handles.

This pours cold water on the idea of Fable 4 and Perfect Dark game announcements in the near future. However, this does not mean that such games will not be made for the Xbox Series X, but simply that they will not be announced in the near future.

The Fable series originally debuted on the original Xbox, a Zelda-like third-person action RPG in which the main focus of the game was making choices between good and evil. Loved by many, a sequel appeared on the Xbox 360, and the third game was developed in-house after Microsoft acquired the developer Lionhead Studios.

After "Fable 3," however, the series took a dark turn, with only the odd "Fable" appearing: "Fable: The Journey Kinect," released in 2012, failed to satisfy fans' desire for a new "Fable" game. Nor did "Fable Fortune," a free-to-play collectible card game, provide a suitable follow-up to "Fable 3."

In 2013, a teaser trailer for "Fable Legends" introduced a five-player Xbox One game in which players could choose to play as one of four heroes or a villain. However, that game was cancelled in 2016 with the announcement of Lionshead Studios' closure.

Fable 4 seemed doomed until Xbox boss Phil Spencer hinted that the game was in production as of E3 2018. Since then, there have been few hints about Fable 4.

However, for the Xbox Series X to go head-to-head with the PS5, it needs a strong first-party exclusive game. Therefore, while the arrival of Fable 4 may not be imminent, it is still a possibility.

The same can be said for Perfect Dark. Originally a hit first-person game for the Nintendo 64 developed by Rare, it was effectively reworked for the Xbox 360 as Perfect Dark Zero when Microsoft bought the development company in 2002. The new "Perfect Dark" game will help Rare regain its first-person shooter glory after the last "Sea of Thieves" game.

If the new Fable 4 and Perfect Dark games are indeed coming to the Xbox Series X, the console's 12 teraflops of power and ray-tracing capabilities will be put to great use. In addition, games such as "Fable 4" are likely to feature large open-world environments, which will especially benefit from the Xbox Series X's fast SSDs. Time will tell, however, if any of these games will go from rumor to reality.
