PS5 prices and pre-orders can go live right away - here's what we know (update)

The PS5's price and release date are still shrouded in mystery, but if we take semi-confident leakers on Twitter seriously, we may soon find out both: two prominent PS5 forecasters predicted that pre-orders would begin on July 13, but that rumor never materialized. Since then, an Amazon pre-order page has been released, but there is still no price or option to purchase the console.

The information comes from sister site Laptop Magazine, which collected tweets from two PS5 leakers on Twitter: IronManPS5 and Roberto Serrano. The former is a popular PlayStation fan and the latter is an Italian analyst. Both have been somewhat accurate in the past when it comes to the dates and times of PlayStation events, and both have been wrong on occasion, especially when it comes to the PS5 price and release date announcements.

In any case, IronManPS5 claims that PS5 reservations "start on Monday," and to be fair, Monday is not over yet. Serrano, on the other hand, claims that reservations will open at 12:30 a.m. PT, which is more than 12 hours ago as of this writing. If he meant afternoon instead of morning, I think there is still a chance, but it seems slim.

My advice is the same as always: don't listen to leaks from sketchy sources, especially on social media. Wait for Sony to make an official announcement. It is not impossible that either leaker may indeed have inside information from Sony, but as Serrano himself points out, Sony is a flexible company and may change its mind at the last minute, as it did when it postponed its June press conference.

Similarly, the source of the price and release date rumors is not necessarily a proven source: ViralJunkie's Tom Henderson claims that the PS5 will be priced at US$499 or £449, with a worldwide release date of November 20 (November 14 in Japan) . Thus, the PS5 digital version will likely be priced at US$550 or more.

In any case, we will know in the next 10 hours whether Sony planned to offer pre-orders today. If not, we have only another day or two before other leakers claim to have solid information about the pre-order start date. And the cycle will repeat itself.

Only Sony knows when the PS5 will be released and how much the console will cost. Pre-orders will begin as soon as it is ready. However, on social media the line between "substantial leaks" and "educated guesses" is very thin.

Either way, we'll be keeping an eye on Sony's social media accounts throughout the day. On the other hand, I'm not going to pre-order a PS5, and you may not want to either.
