PS5 Spider-Man Miles Morales will play in stunning 60K at 4fps - but there's a catch

Will PS5 games run natively at 4k resolution and 60fps? Good question, but the answer to it is mixed: a new tweet from Insomniac Games confirms that "Spider-Man: Miles Morales" will run at 4k/60fps in the optional "Performance Mode." What this means for the game's default resolution and frame rate is yet to be determined.

Sony's own discussion of the hardware explains that the system is targeting 4k/60fps for most games, but according to Digital Foundry's deep dive, the PS5's 4k resolution is set, but the 60fps frame rate has not been determined; Insomniac's Spider-Man tweet seems to back up Digital Foundry's claims. Here is the full text of the tweet:

The tweet itself leaves a lot of room for interpretation:

"Swing through the city like never before on PS5 with the optional 4K / 60fps performance mode."

Does this mean that "Spider-Man: Miles Morales" will run at 30 fps by default? If so, what graphical trade-offs can players expect? Some commenters have speculated that ray tracing might work better at a 30 fps frame rate, or that a lower frame rate would allow for other graphical improvements. Whatever the default mode of Spider-Man: Miles Morales, it does not include a stable 4K/60fps experience. [On the one hand, this may be disappointing to prospective PS5 buyers, as 4K/60fps standard is a huge improvement over the PS4 Pro's 4K/30fps and 1080p/60fps options. On the other hand, the option to play at 4K/60fps will be included with the game and therefore available to anyone who wants it. Even powerful PCs have to make trade-offs between resolution, frame rate, and graphic bells and whistles. Questions have been raised as to whether Microsoft's next-generation console will reach its 4K/60fps potential for all games; like the PS4 Pro, Microsoft's current Xbox One X console is already capable of 4K resolution and 30fps frame rates for many games

Players have expressed a lot of confusion about the tweet, so it is quite possible that Insomniac (or Sony) will follow up with more information about the game's native resolution and frame rate. Until then, it would be good to know that "Spider-Man: Miles Morales" will run at the "ideal" resolution and frame rate of the PS5.
