The price of the PS5 just leaked online - and it's not cheap

Despite announcing the PS5 a few months ago, Sony has yet to reveal the price of its next-generation gaming console, leading to much speculation. Current estimates put the PS5's price at around $500.

And this prediction may be correct, thanks to French retailer Carrefour, which has posted the price of the PS5 and its accessories. The retailer quickly took down the listing, but BGR found the listing and indicates that the Digital Edition version will be cheaper, at €399, while the regular PS5 will cost €499.

Given that the European prices already include VAT, these prices translate roughly to $587 and $469, respectively. If the prices do not include taxes, they would roughly translate to $500 and $400, which would be in line with the previously rumored prices of the PS5 and the digital version.

But here's the problem. A hint is that all peripherals are priced the same: the DualSense controller is priced at €49.90, as are the Pulse 3D headphones and the media controller.

Now, unless Sony has some quirk in the pricing of its peripherals, it is highly unlikely that the proprietary headphones will cost the same as the charging dock for the DualSense controller. Therefore, Sony has not yet told retailers how much the PS5 and its peripherals will cost, and retailers can only speculate.

In our view, the PS5 will cost €499, which translates to £450 in the UK. Sony's next-generation console is expected to be more expensive than the Xbox Series X, at $500 versus some estimates of $400.

Microsoft, on the other hand, seems more focused on building the Xbox ecosystem than on making a profit from hardware sales; we have yet to hear an official price for the Xbox Series X, but it may be less than the PS5.

It won't be long before Sony and Microsoft reveal the prices of the PS5 and Xbox Seires X, given that both consoles are scheduled to be released during the holiday season.
