Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 coming next week reveals — Here's what to expect

Samsung's Unpacked event earlier this month was chock-full of product announcements, from cell phones to wireless earbuds, tablets, and smartwatches. And on September 1, Samsung is set to follow up that teaser with an announcement.

Samsung has announced another live stream event specifically for its new folderables; called "Unpacked Part 2," it will begin at 7am PT/10am ET and can be followed from Samsung.com.

We already know a lot about the Galaxy Z Fold 2 - partly because Samsung immediately talked up its design in the first Unpacked session, and partly thanks to leaks about the new foldable phone.

Like the Galaxy Z Flip before it, the new Fold will feature ultra-thin glass for better protection and rigidity; the 7.6-inch internal display will support a 120Hz refresh rate, and the 6.2-inch external display will be significantly It will be larger. We are also told that the rear camera will consist of three 12-megapixel sensors with three optics: wide-angle, ultra-wide-angle, and telephoto.

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 will be available for pre-order on September 1, the day of the event. (The first Fold was priced at an astronomical $1,980.) Evan Blass also leaked a date of September 18 earlier this month, but there is no confirmation yet as to when the device will begin shipping.

Overall, the new Fold appears to be a considerable improvement over the previous model in every conceivable way. The original Galaxy Fold was notorious for its initial durability issues, but Samsung seems to have dispelled that with the Galaxy Z Flip earlier this year.

The upcoming device will also feature 5G connectivity, something the first Galaxy Fold lacked. In addition, code published this summer by Max Weinbach hints that the phone will support Verizon's 5G millimeter wave network.

We look forward to trying out the Galaxy Fold 2 ourselves in the coming weeks, and the September 1 event should answer some of the still burning questions about pricing and new software features. Stay tuned.
