PS5 release date could be staggered — and it's coming here first

Sony has yet to reveal exactly when the PS5 will arrive. Officially, the console is supposed to arrive in the holiday season of 2020.

However, we may have a better idea of where the PS5 will first appear, as the company has already announced that the PS5 will be available for purchase in the US, and that it will be available in the UK, Europe, and Asia.

Twitter user Riian van Wyk spotted a trailer for "Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War" uploaded to PlayStation's official YouTube channel before it was quickly taken down earlier this week. The trailer showcased various digital versions of the game. Curiously, it also stated that the PlayStation 5 would be available by Holiday 2020 for players in the US and Canada, and by late 2020 for "other regions."

Since Van Wyk revealed these details on Twitter, the original trailer has been set to private. A new version of the trailer has been released, but there is no information anywhere about shipping. However, the same wording can be found on the official Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War website. The site states that the PS5 version will be available "in the U.S. and Canada in Holiday 2020" and repeats "late 2020" for the rest of the world.

Sony has not issued an official comment, but given the company's relative silence regarding additional PS5 releases, this new release schedule could be very realistic. Nevertheless, it would contradict an earlier statement by Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan to GamesIndustry.biz that the game would launch "worldwide" this holiday season.

Previously, the UK version of the PS5 product page by Sony itself changed the console's release date from Holiday 2020 to late 2020. The U.S. version has not been changed; it is possible that only "Black Ops Cold War" was shifted, but it seems unlikely that Sony would also change the information on the official page and then scramble to remove the message from the "Call of Duty" trailer.

With the holiday season looming large, we hope to see a clear announcement from Sony soon regarding the PS5 release date. Earlier this week, rumors circulated that a PS5 event would take place on September 9, and while it is unclear if those rumors were based in reality, we are hopeful that we will learn more about the launch plans ASAP.
