OnePlus8T has some great bonus features, but there's a catch

A special OnePlus 8T model has been spotted with attractive bonus features. The problem is that there is only one place to get it.

There is also a carrier-exclusive OnePlus 8T Plus variant, as revealed in T-Mobile's hands-on video. This is almost the same phone, but with added support for water and dust.

The OnePlus 8T Plus has an IP68 rating against ingress from dust and water. Historically, OnePlus has never bothered to officially rate its phones, a trend first broken with the OnePlus 8 Pro. Water and dust resistance is inadequate, but the assurance that the phone is safe even when submerged in water is reassuring.

Apart from this and support for certain 5G frequencies from T-Mobile, this version of the phone is almost indistinguishable from the regular 8T. This includes the same color choice of two colors, a 6.55-inch, 120Hz display, 12GB RAM and 256GB storage, Android 11-based OxygenOS 11 operating system, quad rear camera, and 65W charging.

Even more unusual is that T-Mobile is selling the OnePlus 8T Plus for the same price as the regular 8T: $749. T-Mobile seems to be paying for the IPX rating and not passing on the cost to avoid driving away potential customers.

In our review of the OnePlus 8T, we praised the phone's display and fast charging, but didn't have much nice to say about the camera; the addition of an IP protection rating is a bonus, but doesn't significantly change our opinion about the phone's overall quality I guess.

If you're interested, the OnePlus 8T goes on sale in the US on October 23, priced at $749. In the UK, the same model costs £649, but there is also a lower-priced version for £549 that uses 8GB RAM and 128GB storage instead. Both will go on sale on October 20.
