PS5 owners can get a free PSVR adapter — here's how

We know that the PS5 will support virtual reality gaming, but as far as we know, the PSVR 2 headset won't be available for a while. Thankfully, the current PlayStation VR headset on PS4 is fully compatible with PS5.

The PS5 has its own camera, but it cannot be used with the VR headset like the PS4 camera. Therefore, an adapter is needed to allow the old camera to be used with the new console. Sony is distributing adapters to PSVR owners who wish to use them.

According to the PlayStation FAQ, anyone who owns a PSVR is entitled to a free adapter, with a limit of one per household. The request also requires a PSVR serial number, to ensure that no one is prematurely requesting an adapter that they have no use for. This number can be found on the back of the PSVR's processing unit, below the microUSB port and power socket.

You must also give your name, email, address, and phone number. This is because Sony cannot send you an adapter unless they know who is getting it and where it is going.

Once you have all the information in hand, you can head over to the registration page to receive your free adapter. If you are in the U.S., click here; if you are in Europe, click here. Sony plans to ship the adapters to Europe and North America in mid-November, and to Japan at the end of October. In any case, they will be notified when the adapters ship and delivery will take up to two weeks.

Again, this is completely free and the only way to play PSVR on the PS5.

There is no mention of this being a limited time deal, so there is no rush. But even if you don't buy a PS5 this year, it's still worth signing up for. As long as you don't misplace the adapter, you'll always be ready.
