iPhone13 Leak just revealed Bad news for the long-awaited feature

Apple has not yet finished shipping all iPhone 12 models - the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Max will be available on November 13 - but iPhone 13 rumors are already springing up. And the latest iPhone 13 claims suggest that the long-awaited feature may not make the cut for next year's handset.

Twitter user Jioriku, a self-described Apple leaker and analyst, claims to have seen an early prototype of the iPhone 13. The new model is described as "basically a 12 with an extra step," but what has drawn the most attention in Jioriku's tweets is the claim that the new model does not currently feature in-display TouchID.

This would deviate from several longstanding rumors about Apple's future phone plans: as early as 2019, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted that Apple would add in-display Touch ID to the 2021 iPhone. Earlier this summer, a patent surfaced indicating that Apple might do just that, further fueling speculation that Touch ID would return in the iPhone 13.

Jioriku's tweet, discovered by WCCFTech, does not necessarily mean that Touch ID will be discontinued. For one thing, Apple is known for making many prototypes that don't necessarily see the light of day. And Jioriku also adds that prototypes are not the final hardware.

Apple could also include a TouchID sensor inside the iPhone 13's lock button, as it did with the iPad Air 4. This would allow the next iPhone to be unlocked by fingerprint recognition in addition to Face ID.

More notable in Jioriku's tweet is the idea that the iPhone 13 will not deviate much from the iPhone 12 design. This contradicts several rumors about future iPhones and will no doubt disappoint those who were expecting a major design change.

Specifically, some rumors called for Apple to eliminate or at least shrink the notch that houses the front camera and Face ID sensor. Not so with this prototype, says Jioriku. In a subsequent tweet, he wrote: "From what I've heard, the notch hasn't been shrunk (yet)."

Other rumors speculate that at least one iPhone 13 model may be portless as Apple moves away from the Lightning connector to a phone that supports only wireless charging.

The iPhone 13 is expected to feature a display with a refresh rate of 120 Hz. The new model is also expected to have an A15 processor. Other than that, we have to spend a full year predicting what Apple plans for the iPhone in 2021.
