PS5 Launch Date Details Just Revealed — How to Buy You

Want to buy a PS5 on launch day? Sony has announced that you will need to work from home to get your hands on the PS5.

In a post on the PlayStation Blog, Sid Shuman (Senior Director of Content Communications, Sony Interactive Entertainment) revealed that you cannot buy the PS5 directly on launch day. That's very good.

According to Shuman's post, the PS5 will only be available through retailers' online stores on November 12 and November 19 (depending on region). This, he said, is to "protect the safety of gamers, retailers, and staff amid the COVID-19 epidemic. Just yesterday, the number of new infections in the U.S. hit a record high for a single day, with more than 100,000 positive tests reported.

Nevertheless, those who have already pre-ordered a PS5 can pick one up at their local store. Retailers will be using appointment times and safety protocols to ensure that this is done safely, and Schumann advises people to check with their local retailer for these details.

This clarification is necessary because the tweet from @AskTarget was not exactly clear up front. First, when the store's account was asked about the availability of the release date, it only replied, "Yes, it will be available in stores on November 12, 2020." In a subsequent tweet, it was forced to explain that one would need to purchase the console online and select in-store pickup as a delivery option.

The PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition are currently out of stock at all retailers, so November 12 will likely be the next chance to get the consoles. Best Buy will be selling the PS5 exclusively on Black Friday (November 27) this year.

Therefore, the only way to secure a PS5 outside of those two dates appears to be through a contest at Burger King. Those who order the chain's 2 for $5 meal (or simply spend $5 or more) will receive a virtual game token to enter into the BK app or the BK.com website for a chance to win the next-generation gaming console. As someone who tried this project, I was as disappointed when I missed out as I was when I scarfed down the hamburger.

Stay tuned to Tom's Guide as we continue to follow the advent of the next generation of gaming consoles and bring you all the news about the PS5.
