Our review of the Xbox Series X showed how powerful and comprehensive Microsoft's new console is and how it can run old Xbox games, but it won't be the machine to play PlayStation 2 games.

However, those lucky enough to have an Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S are using emulation to run PS2 games on both of Microsoft's new consoles YouTuber Modern Vintage Gamer has been using the Xbox Series S's developer mode, showing how to run classic Sony games on the Xbox Series S.

Given that the new Xbox console can run new, gorgeous graphics games like "Assassin's Creed Valhalla," it may seem odd to use a powerful new console to run a decade-old PS2 game. But some people like to test the capabilities and limits of new consoles. So it was only a matter of time before we saw someone roll up their sleeves and dig into the new Xbox.

According to VG247, the new Xbox console can be used to run seemingly older games because the developer mode allows it to run Universal Windows Platform (UWP) apps. This will allow open source retro game emulators such as RetroArch to run, providing a framework for running older games on modern gaming hardware.

What is interesting and somewhat ironic here is that the PS5 can only run PS4 games in backward compatibility mode. In comparison, the Xbox Series X and Series S will run Xbox games dating back to the original Xbox and will be enhanced by the addition of a high dynamic range automatic up-mixing feature.

While these enhancements do not apply to PS2 games on the new Xbox machines, it is still interesting to note that the PS5 can run some PlayStation classics while the PS5 cannot.

Of course, since both the PS5 and the Xbox Series X are scarce, few people will be able to afford the new consoles. This is your chance to get a new console while avoiding the duffers.
