PS5 and Xbox Series X Replenishment – AMD Reveals When the Shortage Will Subside

Finding PS5 and Xbox Series X inventory is nearly impossible, despite the best efforts of Sony and Microsoft. But it is not as simple as just building more inventory. [AMD warned that the current chip shortage would last at least until mid-2021. That means new consoles will be hard to come by anytime soon.

The news was announced by AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su in the company's Q4 and full-year 2020 financial results. The company posted another $1.28 billion in sales last year, but CEO Suh expects the "tightness" to continue until production capacity is ramped up. That is not expected to happen until at least the second half of this year.

AMD is a supplier of custom CPUs and GPUs used in both the Xbox Series X and PS5, meaning that these too will be limited in capacity until AMD is able to ramp up production.

Fewer chips means fewer consoles, and fewer consoles means that the infuriating inventory shortage will not end soon. Microsoft has already confirmed that the inventory situation for the Xbox Series X and S will not improve until April at the earliest.

Unfortunately, it is not just limited inventory that is making the PS5 and Xbox Series X difficult to obtain. Demand for both consoles is very high and has been for several months as gamers look to upgrade their existing systems. To make matters worse, that demand has also caught the attention of duffers who use bots to pick up consoles and sell them for high prices.

Progress may be slow, but hopefully the fact that more consoles are arriving is a good thing. In the meantime, we are always looking to stock up on consoles and will update our PS5 and Xbox Series X Where to Buy guides with the latest news.
