Black PS5 console is finally coming — but there is a catch

Ever since Sony first announced the PS5, fans have dreamed of a sleek, all-black design for their gaming console. That black PS5 dream may be coming true.

Custom hardware skin maker dbrand has announced that it will begin selling PS5 faceplates. It is called "Darkplates."

One of the advantages of the PS5 is that the faceplate can be easily removed. Therefore, transforming the console into a black machine is as easy as replacing these plates with dbrand ones. These plates are black, matte, and micro-textured on the inside, just like the default design of the PS5.

Of course, this is not the first time someone has tried to offer a black PS5. Last year, accessory maker PlateStation announced that it would sell custom PS5 faceplates, but Sony scrapped that plan. Later, the folks at SUP3R5 offered a customized black PS5 console, but canceled all pre-orders after a "threat" to their safety.

Dbrand blamed Sony for the PlateStation and replaced the standard PS5 micro-details with its own "apocalyptic dbrand version." The company claims it will not be sued for releasing these, but whether Sony will take issue with the sale of unauthorized PS5 accessories is another matter.

Unfortunately, dbrand faceplates are not currently available for purchase. No pricing information is available yet. In fact, the company has sent out an email survey to those who signed up for notifications, asking how much they would be willing to pay. With the lowest price being $69, this upgrade does not appear to be cheap.

The company also asks if they are willing to pay $15 for shipping because "the PS5 is [explosively] huge." This means that Darkplates is also quite large, and the box it is delivered in is larger than the PS5 itself.

Users may also be able to add a custom skin to the PS5's center spine. dbrand is offering a $0.69 price tag for what looks like a simple sticker to put on the console.

It is unclear when these plates will be available, and dbrand's website admits that inventory is limited. Hopefully not as limited as PS5 inventory, which is still incredibly difficult to obtain.
