Shy Lara Jean Covey (Lana Condor) discovers that five letters she wrote to an unrequited love, but never sent, have mysteriously reached that person.

Suddenly, she becomes the center of attention, and to deflect suspicion, she agrees to form a "fake" relationship with one of those crushes, Peter Kavinsky (Noah Centineo), who is trying to get a reaction from his ex-girlfriend. Of course, the supposedly phony relationship leads to the real one, but even though "To All the Boys" is a bit predictable, it is always sweet, funny, and likable thanks to the charisma and chemistry of the lead actors and the gentle, light tone.

It's no exaggeration to say that Paul Thomas Anderson's period drama doesn't look like a fun romance at first. Daniel Day-Lewis plays Reynolds Woodcock, a demanding and controlling fashion designer in 1950s London. Except for his sister and manager Cyril (Lesley Manville), no one seems to have any personal feelings for Reynolds.

He appears to give the same treatment to Alma (Vicki Kreeps), the headstrong waitress he scouts as his muse and model. One of the great pleasures of "Phantom Thread" is discovering how perfect these two oddballs are for each other. It is not until the very end that the full extent of their perverse chemistry is revealed.

When longtime friends Ben (Jack Quaid) and Alice (Maya Erskine) promise to be each other's dates at a series of weddings over the course of several months, it's not hard to imagine how things will go when both of them want to date others. Despite their claims, the attraction between the two is obvious, and it is only a matter of time before they both admit their feelings and act on them.

Their romance proceeds along its well-worn course, but Ben and Alice are complex characters, and Quaid and Erskine make them into genuine, well-rounded human beings defined by more than their interest in each other. Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron may not be a very romantic pairing, but they work surprisingly well together in this romantic comedy set in a high-pressure political campaign. Theron plays an ambitious presidential candidate who hires an unsympathetic journalist, played by Rogen, as his speechwriter. Theron's Charlotte Field and Rogen's Fred Hulaski are also childhood neighbors, which makes their burgeoning history together a compelling relationship.

"The Long Shot" smartly portrays politics without allowing social commentary to overwhelm the central romance. It portrays two equally intelligent, passionate characters who respect each other as much as they do their physical attraction. Sharp, warm, often hilarious, and supportive, the main couple is.

Todd Haynes' film, based on the novel by Patricia Highsmith, may be set in the 1950s, but it offers a surprisingly positive outlook on its lesbian protagonists. Cate Blanchett plays the titular character, an elegant divorcée whose life is shaken up by Therese (Rooney Mara), a shy clerk and aspiring photographer, when she leaves a glove on Therese's counter. Carol's vengeful ex-husband is battling her for custody of their daughter.

In the face of pressure, Carol and Therese develop a tender bond, and director Haynes does not ignore the larger situation, turning the film into a gorgeous and moving romantic drama. Blanchett and Mara give wonderfully nuanced performances, capturing the excitement and anxiety of a new, possibly forbidden love.
