5 Best Movies You Can Stream Right Now, Like Netflix's 'A Family Affair'

Netflix's "A Family Affair" is another entry in the unconventional romance category that has swept Hollywood recently. Pairings featuring celebrities are another recent trend.

But unlike films like "Not So Much About You," which focuses on the age gap between a musician in his early 20s and a woman 12 years his senior, Zac Efron's Chris is at least 30, so "A Family Affair" takes a less offensive turn It's moving in a less unpleasant direction.

While most of society may raise an eyebrow at this particular combination, it is fair to respectfully pursue someone with a fully developed frontal lobe. However, there is no power relationship at stake. Most people don't bat an eye when an older man dates a teenage girl.

So, whether it's a celebrity-centric romantic comedy, a taboo combination, or a combo of the two, here are the five best movies like "Family Affair" you can stream right now.

Like "Family Affair," "The Fall Guy" takes a satirical approach to Hollywood. His relationship with fictional director Jodie (Emily Blunt) is similarly over-the-top and goofy, more charming than obnoxious.

Efron's Chris is certainly a caricature of the satirized (and undeservedly egotistical) genre actor, but while "The Fall Guy" puts Colt in a frankly absurd hostage situation, the love interest tries to turn Jody on in an endearingly over-the-top way.

In 2022, Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson played out a story similar to The Family Affair, portraying the relationship between Charlie, an average guy, and Kat, a superstar. In a rather ridiculous setup, Kat learns of her fiancé's serial cheating just minutes before their scheduled live wedding and decides to marry Charlie, a complete stranger, in front of a live audience.

Naturally, Kat and Charlie must overcome the challenges of falling in love and merging two very different lifestyles. Like Brooke, Charlie has a daughter, but she is much younger than Brooke's daughter in Family Matters (but still handles the pairing much better than her 24-year-old counterpart).

In 2023, gay relationships should not be labeled taboo. But as Nora (Rachel Hillson) points out in "Red White & Royal Blue," "Princes are not allowed to be gay." Sigh. Of course, that is not the only reason why the relationship between Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine) and Alex Claremont Diaz (Taylor Zakar Perez) has caused an international scandal. They happen to be, respectively, the prince of England and the eldest son of the United States.

The couple's messy politics lead to another challenge in the optics sector. The royal family cannot take a political position, and Alex is directly involved in his mother's re-election campaign (and has his own political aspirations). So to say "it's complicated" is an understatement.

Henry and Alex have already made headlines for collapsing on top of a bibulously expensive cake at a royal wedding. Who else could fly them to their rendezvous in a private jet? The film is a hilarious (and really steamy) interlude between the serious and heartbreaking scenes of a forced closed relationship.

The "High School Musical" trilogy may have introduced the world to Zac Efron's musical talents. The Family Affair is also not the first time he has played a character involved in a taboo relationship.

The 2017 film The Greatest Showman is set in the early 1800s. At the time, interracial pairs were met with horror (and sometimes fatal accidents), while child brides were considered perfectly fine. It adds up. With this information, it is easy to understand why Philip, played by Efron, faces tremendous hurdles when pursuing a relationship with Anne, played by Zendaya.

The musical is certainly more drama than rom-com, but it is a love letter to the weirdos of the world who embrace their differences. In the case of the film's characters, they find a safe haven in the circus. While there is a problematic view of the film as a white savior, one can't help but root for Philip and Anne--and after all, the film is a product of the century in which it is set.

Now, you might think that the characters in Clueless have lives similar to those in the Noxzema commercials, but they are much more than that (except for Elton, played by Breckin Myers.) Cher, played by Alicia Silverstone, must learn to think about someone other than herself when she falls in love with her brother-in-law.

Before you judge, it is important to note that the two parents were only married for a short time and did not grow up together. Still, it was a rather scandalous concept at the time, and 20 years later it still manages to attract attention. The film is, after all, loosely based on Jane Austen's Emma. The couple is charming enough to make you want to root for them.

Some also take issue with the slight age difference between Josh and Cher, played by Paul Rudd. He is a college student (set up as a freshman) and she is 16. So, while not scandalous, the age difference of a few years is much more significant in the formidable teenage years than in later life. Nevertheless, Cher's father (Dan Hedaya) is not subtly concerned about their relationship. If the overprotective father is completely on board, they'll probably be fine.
