While much attention has been focused on whether or not the iPhone 17 will be the world's first 2nm chip, new reports indicate that the A19 Pro will have a 2nm structure width.

Apple's chipmaker partner TSMC was thought to begin production of the world's first 2nm chip in early 2025, and Cult of Mac discovered an article on the Korean site ETNews that the manufacturer is working on a prototype of the next Apple chip It revealed.

The 2nm A19 processor could be ready for the iPhone 17 to be released next fall.

Presumably, the 2nm form factor should bring a leap in performance and efficiency.

The A18 in the iPhone 16 is already expected to be reasonably powerful, and Apple expects significant demand for the next iteration of its phones.

TSMC reportedly did not expect to begin manufacturing new 2nm chips until next year.

However, Korean sites claim that TSMC will begin test production next week. Since last year, TSMC has installed 2nm fabrication tools in one of its factories, and ETNews speculates that the Taiwanese company is accelerating the process to "ensure stable yields before mass production."

TSMC has said that N2 technology (what they call 2nm) will begin mass production in 2025; early prototyping of 2nm chips may allow the company to find a way to quickly produce its next chips.

"TSMC's N2 technology, when introduced in 2025, will be the most advanced technology in the semiconductor industry in terms of both density and energy efficiency," TSMC said in its explanation.

"Leading nanosheet transistor structures, N2 technology will provide full-node performance and power consumption advantages to meet the growing need for energy-efficient computing.

The iPhone 17 is not the only Apple device expected to feature a 2nm processor; the M5 chip for the MacBook (and possibly the iPad Pro) will likely use a 2nm structure width.
