Prime Video's "The Outer Range" is a sci-fi western series in which Josh Brolin confronts a supernatural mystery in the wilds of Wyoming. And while Brolin seems to be able to handle interdimensional mutations, escaping the censored axe is a step too far.

As reported by Deadline, Prime Video has decided to cancel "The Outer Range" and not air a third season. This disappointing news comes less than two months after the second season aired in May.

In today's cutthroat streaming industry, abrupt terminations are not uncommon, but this decision seems particularly harsh. For starters, "The Outer Range" Season 2 seemed to have had a reasonable response on Prime Video, topping the service's most-watched list in late May.

The second season also received much praise from critics. The Rotten Tomatoes Critics' Consensus said, "With better treatment of its characters and a willingness to get even weirder, the second season of 'The Outer Range' is in the zone."

The second season of "The Outer Range" was rated as the best season of the year by the Critics' Consensus. The ratings were similarly high, at 81%.

In "The Outer Range," Brolin plays Royal Abbott, a rancher fighting for the survival of his land and family after discovering a mysterious black void in the wilderness. Along with his wife Cecilia (Lili Taylor), Royal investigates the disappearance of his daughter-in-law and meets Autumn (Imogen Poots), a mysterious drifter who may be connected to these strange events.

The show's devoted fan base is already lamenting the cancellation, especially since several unresolved plot points remain and the conclusion of season two was not written as a series finale. Unfortunately, these loose ends are likely to remain unanswered forever.

Adding salt to the wound is the fact that Brolin had hoped to appear in the third season. In an interview with Jonathan Bloomberg, Brolin was asked if he would return for another season. Brolin said, "But I think season three will be great, because this series is getting more and more fascinating the longer it goes on, both as an idea and as an experience."

The first (and perhaps only) two seasons of "The Outer Range" are still streaming on Prime Video.
