Turning off the iPhone is simpler with iOS 18

It turns out that iOS 18 has a lot of fun little upgrades that Apple didn't mention on stage at WWDC. And (via 9to5Mac) one of the newly discovered additions is a permanent power button in the redesigned Control Center.

As this screenshot from the iOS 18 beta shows, the off switch is now located in the upper right corner of the Control Center, easily accessible by swiping down from the corner of the phone to access the controls.

If you want to turn off the iPhone now, you must press and hold the side button and one of the volume buttons. This iOS 18 change allows for quick access to the power-off command at all times

This is similar to certain Android skins, such as Google's own Android 14 and Samsung's One UI 6 for Galaxy phones. like OnePlus Other Android phones, like the OnePlus, also require a combination of power and volume buttons, or a long press on the side button to first activate the digital assistant, but holding it down switches to the power menu.

While it would be nice for Apple to simplify the iPhone's power-off switch, the simplest way would be to re-bind the power-off command to a long press of the side button. However, this command is Siri's at the moment and has just been upgraded with Apple Intelligence. Let's hope it will eventually become an option.

iOS 18 will also add features like a reworked Photos app, slow charging notifications, and new customization options for the phone's home and lock screens when it comes to compatible iPhones. Available for download now if you are a registered Apple developer, the public beta should arrive within a few weeks, with the final version expected to appear in September of this year alongside the launch of the iPhone 16.
