Samsung Reveals release date of Galaxy Ring, as it takes you to court

We now know when to expect the Samsung Galaxy Ring to arrive, and all it took was a lawsuit to give us that information

Samsung filed a pre-emptive lawsuit against Oura, making Oura Ring, that it would have to file a claim against the Galaxy Ring. From Oura, Samsung wants the United States, citing what it called Oura's patent to file claims against other smart ring manufacturers. The District Court concludes that any claim "covers features common to virtually all smart rings."(You can read the PDF of Samsung's legal submission.

That lawsuit has more interesting details than smart ring technology claims or counterclaims — Samsung has also revealed that it plans to ship the Galaxy Ring, which it first previewed at the Galaxy Unpacked event earlier this year. According to the lawsuit, Samsung plans to sell Galaxy rings in the U.S. "8 May or around that time.""

We expect more Galaxy Ring details, along with release date confirmation, during Samsung's next Galaxy Unpacked event scheduled to take place in the summer. Assuming the rumored 7/10 date for that event is correct, the 8-month shipping date for the Galaxy ring would fit well into that schedule.

The Galaxy Ring is exactly what its name suggests — the ring you wear on your finger, providing fitness and health tracking capabilities. Some of the Galaxy ring features that Samsung has already teased include a vitality score that measures how much you are resting. We expect Samsung to offer a built-in heart rate sensor with the potential for blood pressure monitoring and AFib detection, assuming it can gain regulatory approval for these features.

Samsung hasn't alluded to the price, but expects something close toス300 based on the cost of competing devices.

Oura rings currently dominate the smart ring market, and Oura may want to keep things that way. That's why Oura and Samsung might find themselves fighting it out in court as each ring fights for customer finger space. The comparison between the Galaxy Ring and the Oura Ring confirms how the conflict will be measured, based on the details and rumors of the early Galaxy Ring.
